Lead endoscopy nurse Joy Osariemen

What are your responsibilities as lead endoscopy nurse?

As the lead endoscopy nurse, I am responsible for the daily management of the unit and its staff. I ensure the department runs smoothly, focusing on policy adherence, audits and steps toward accreditation. A big part of my role involves supporting the team during clinical activities and making sure the unit functions efficiently. It's a balance of looking after both the staff and the unit, and each day brings its own details and challenges.

What inspired you to pursue nursing?

My inspiration for nursing came from my grandmother, who was a retired midwife. Growing up around her, I saw the lifelong commitment to caring for others that healthcare professionals embody. Even after she retired, she still showed the same level of care to those around her. While I considered other career paths, such as medicine or computer science, I ultimately chose nursing because of the sense of fulfilment it offers and the job security it provides.

For me, the most rewarding part of nursing is the feedback I receive from patients. When they express their gratitude for the care I provide, it makes everything worthwhile.

What makes Mayo Clinic Healthcare special?

At Mayo Clinic Healthcare, compassionate care is a top priority, especially for patients undergoing stressful procedures such as colonoscopies. Many patients come in not only with physical concerns but also with anxiety or worry. As a nurse, I have the responsibility to show compassion, communicate effectively and involve patients in their care, which makes all the difference in their experiences.

What do you enjoy the most about working at Mayo Clinic Healthcare?

One of the things I appreciate most about working here is the time I get to spend with patients. Unlike in some of my previous roles, I don't feel rushed, and I can properly educate patients before and after procedures. Endoscopy involves a lot of patient education, and I truly value being able to ensure patients fully understand the process.

I also have a strong support system within my team. We function like a family, always there for each other, especially when things get tough. We work well together, which makes even the most challenging days much more manageable.

What three words would you use to describe Mayo Clinic Healthcare?

I would describe Mayo Clinic Healthcare as excellent, compassionate and strong. These words capture the high standards of care we provide, the empathetic approach to patient treatment and the strong teamwork that defines the organization.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

In my free time, I enjoy watching movies, playing the guitar and reading. Although I don't have a particular favourite movie, I've really enjoyed watching "24" and "The Last Ship." My favourite book is "Purple Hibiscus" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. As a proud Nigerian, I also have a deep love for Nigerian cuisine.
