How did you come to work in healthcare?
I came to healthcare through a long, convoluted route. I started my career in finance and banking, so I've always understood negotiating and getting great deals for customers.
About a decade ago, I moved into healthcare, starting in social care as a care home manager, which softened the edges for me. I then moved into private healthcare, into the hospital world, and I've found myself really enjoying it. I love talking to doctors and asking them questions about why they chose their specialty, and you get some fascinating stories from them. It's a great sector to work in.
What do you love about your job?
The thing I love about my job is that every day is different — I never know what I'm going to be involved in. One moment, I can be meeting with a doctor, the next I can be talking to a patient, or I could be working with our team in the US to identify how we can grow the business here.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
Developing new ideas, taking them forward, proposing them to our colleagues here in London and in the US, and seeing those come to fruition.
What can patients expect when they come to Mayo Clinic Healthcare?
Since working in London, I've been impressed with our team's service quality. From the friendly smiles at the front desk to the warm greetings from staff, there's a genuine sense of welcome. Everyone is respectful, and the teamwork ensures a smooth patient pathway. We understand that visiting a clinic can be stressful, and the compassion our staff shows daily truly reflects the clinic's values.
How do you relax?
I like to go to the gym and to be out in nature. I'm lucky where I live. I live by a river, so I do a lot of walking on the towpath and being out in nature which I find very therapeutic. At the gym, I do circuit classes, so I have some fun with that too.
Do you experience the Mayo Clinic values in your day to day?
The values of Mayo Clinic really run through everything I've seen, from the first call I had when we started talking about the position to the first show around the building and everyone I've met. It resonated with me and fitted with what I was looking for.
My job allows me to use all the skills I've developed in my career, from banking and finance to social care and understanding how clinicians operate. It's been a great opportunity to work with some high-quality doctors.
How would you describe Mayo Clinic Healthcare in three words?
Respect, compassion, and great teamwork. We have a lot of fun while we're here, and I hope it comes across to patients that we all want to be here and do our very best for them. To me, that makes it feel like a nice place to be.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, I enjoy lots of different activities. I go to the gym. I go to a lot of concerts. And I'm also in my local amateur dramatics group, so I do a bit of acting on the side. I recently played Miss Prism in "The Importance of Being Earnest" by Oscar Wilde.
Do you have any book recommendations?
I'm in a great book club, and we read nonfiction books. One of my favourites recently was on the history of chocolate. It was fascinating to understand how the evolution of chocolate happened, with what was happening in the UK with Cadbury and Rowntree's in York, what was happening with Hershey's in the US, and in Switzerland. It was an interesting read.
